Ajax Building Company Earns Two Awards of Merit from the Associated Builders and Contractors Central Florida Chapter
Every year Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) holds an Excellence in Construction (EIC) competition in which they honor exceptional projects based on vision, innovation, execution, safety, quality control and degree of difficulty. Ajax received two Merit awards this year from the Central Florida Chapter. Both the Eastern Florida State College Student Union project and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Evidence Facility were completed in the Spring of this year and won in the Institutional $10-$20 million category.
Eastern Florida State College Student Union, Melbourne
The new Student Union was Ajax’s third major new building construction project for EFSC, and is now a hub of student activity on the college’s Melbourne campus. The facility comprises 28,000 SF with space for a variety of student services, including student government, clubs and activities, computer, study and advising rooms, four restaurants and a coffee shop. It also houses services for the Career Planning and Development Center where students get assistance to select the career path that’s best for them, learn job-hunting skills, participate in job fairs, gain internships and meet with recruiters from business and industry. The building includes many high-end finishes such as a Modular Arts panel Dune wall, luminous ceiling blades, and quartz counter tops. Its green components include an irrigation system that draws ground water from a central pond for the entire project. All lighting is LED and utilizes occupancy sensors and controls for greater efficiency, and the HVAC system has direct digital controls for maximum efficiency at all times.
Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Evidence Storage Facility, Deland
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Evidence Section provides support to the Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies such as the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Department of Natural Resources, Highway Patrol and area municipalities. This new facility is a secured compound, with Level IV bullet resistant walls, glass, doors and package receivers that stores evidence, property, fire arms, drugs, vehicles, etc. There is 22,306 Cubic Feet of Storage (1.6 miles of shelving or racks) with automated mobile shelving that is integrated with inventory control. The building includes offices, a forensics lab, walk-in biohazard material storage cooler and a covered loading dock. It contains an intake/process area for goods/materials, as well as a staging area for processing evidence purging, archiving or distribution. In addition, the compound includes a vehicle wash, vehicle fueling, razor wire fencing and electronic sliding secure vehicle gates, a helipad and detainee cells. A portion of the facility was hardened to protect it against 200 mph winds, while being designed for and earning LEED Silver certification.
