Ajax Building Corporation Wins 5 ABC Awards For Excellence in Construction
(Tampa, FL) May 18, 2015 — Ajax Building Corporation has won five prestigious Excellence in Construction Awards from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Florida Gulf Coast Chapter. Four of the winning projects are located on university campuses, while the fifth is a public safety complex in Volusia County.
The Gulf Coast Chapter recognizes the best work of general contractor and subcontractor members every other year, highlighting ABC members’ achievements in construction, including the quality of work, size of projects and the amount of different materials used. The “Excellence” program is a vehicle that offers the opportunity for members to showcase their finest work completed within the previous 24 months.
Eagle Award Winners
Osprey Clubhouse and Pool Facility, University of North Florida
Category: Institutional $5 million to $10 million
The amenity-rich 24-hour facility includes a two-story 14,000-square-foot-clubhouse and 77,000 gallon pool for students living on the Jacksonville campus. The facility includes a game lounge, laundry room, commercial-grade kitchen, office, multi-purpose media rooms, restaurant and 2,000 student mail boxes. It was completed in March 2014.
Emergency Operations and Sheriff’s Communication Center, Volusia County
Category: Commercial $10 million to $25 million
This $12 million 43,000 square-foot facility in Deland, with command center and 911 dispatch, was developed on a green site and designed to resist 180 mph winds and an EF3 tornado. The lobby walls are bullet-resistant. The project achieved LEED Silver, 2 Green Globes and local contractors did 90 percent of the work. It was completed in February 2013.
Heavener Hall Warrington College of Business, University of Florida
Category: Institutional $10 million to $25 million
The new gateway to the Gainesville campus was designed in the Collegiate Gothic Style. The 57,000 square-foot brick complex connects to historic Bryan Hall via a third-floor walkway that overlooks an award-winning landscaped courtyard. Completed in November 2014, it is the newest classroom building on campus since the 2010 construction of Hough Hall, also built by Ajax.
Merit Award Winners
U.F. Health Facilities Administration, University of Florida
Category: Commercial $5 million to $10 million
The project on the Gainesville campus included an 11,000 square-foot pre-engineered metal building to be used for offices and a 9,800 square-foot generator plant to service UF Health Shands — two buildings with different functions. Despite unexpected obstacles while working on an active academic medical center campus, Ajax completed both projects on time and on budget in August 2013.
U.F. Healthcare Entry Atrium, University of Florida
Category: Healthcare less than $10 million
The project added a two-layered, multi-colored, stainless steel woven-mesh façade to the 12-story north tower at Shands Hospital on the Gainesville campus. With 400 attachment locations necessary for the framework, meticulous surveys were first done to ensure structure tolerance. The project also included an 8,000 square-foot renovation of the east entry lobby and reception area and was completed in July 2014.
