Ajax Building Corporation Receives Three Awards in the ABC of Georgia’s 2018 Excellence in Construction Competition
Ajax Building Corporation Earns Three Awards in the ABC of Georgia’s 2018 Excellence in Construction Competition.
(Atlanta, GA) June 21, 2018: Every year Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. holds an Excellence in Construction (EIC) competition in which they honor exceptional projects based on vision, innovation, execution, safety, quality control and degree of difficulty. The Georgia chapter recognized Ajax in three different categories with two Awards of Excellence and one Award of Merit.
The Award of Excellence is given to the highest-scoring project in each category after being nominated for top honors by the judges. The Award of Merit is presented to projects that may not qualify for top honors, but that the judges endorse for commendation.
Award of Excellence: SCCPSS May Howard Elementary School, Savannah (Institutional $5 to $15 Million)
This two-story, approximately 106,000 square-foot, project involved new construction and demolition of the old facility. The site remained occupied, and with a student population of 900 Ajax took all necessary steps and extra care to ensure the safety/separation of school personnel and children from the construction area. Some unique features of the project include a central cupola/rotunda in the main hallway between the cafeteria and their media center. Also, the new site was three and a half feet higher than the old elevation at the front of the school and approximately nine feet higher at the back. The school was completed by Ajax/The Polote Corporation, a joint-venture, in October 2017.
Award of Excellence: Atlanta Metropolitan State College Student Services & Success Center, Atlanta (Institutional Under $5 Million)
The goal of this two-story, steel frame 24,724 square-foot, project was to provide a student friendly/student-focused approach during the admission, registration and orientation processes. It is a comprehensive facility for student admissions, registration and orientation communally located to include a main lobby, waiting area, help desk with staff from multiple units/departments, self-help computer kiosks, shared personnel resources, and meeting spaces. Special consideration was given to circulation and way-finding throughout the facility with an entry tie-in to the adjacent existing Library. This project was completed in January 2018.
Award of Merit: Georgia College & State University Renovation of Mayfair Hall and McIntosh House, Milledgeville(Institutional Under $5 Million)
This project consisted of renovations to two historic facilities on the campus of Georgia College & State University; Mayfair Hall, and McIntosh House. These are some of the oldest facilities on the campus of GCSU. The two-story, 9,542 square-foot, wood framed Mayfair Hall became the University’s Enrollment Management Center, which locates all student recruitment functions in this historic building adjacent to the University’s central square providing excellent access and visibility to potential students. McIntosh House, a two-story, 3,391 square-foot wood framed historic residence, now provides space for non-academic offices which had previously been located on the academic core of the campus. This project was completed in July 2017.
