A ribbon is cut by Rutledge Pearson Jr., son of the school’s namesake, as Mayor Donna Deegan holds the ribbon, Lloyd N. Pearson Jr., brother of the school’s namesake, looks on, and former Duval County Public School Superintendent Diana Green, school principal Katie Adkins, and District 5 school board member Warren Jones, cut as well, Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023 at Rutledge H. Pearson Elementary School in Jacksonville, Fla. This is the first new school building built with the half-penny sales tax Duval County voters approved in 2020. This building replaced a deteriorated earlier school on the same land, same namesake. Community activist Eunice Barnum cheers, “Words can’t even explain,” Barnum said. “It’s a landmark advancing our black history.”
